Chapter 8

“I can’t protect you from any of this, and that is really what I want to do. But that chaos you saw? That was the Four Horsemen exerting their power. They’re free from Hell but are trapped in the Nether. They’re trying to get free, and that’s why we’re worried,” Penn explained and massaged the back of her hand. She looked lost, and he wanted so badly to take her away from all of this. He damned the force that made her responsible for her duties.

“I’m sorry I deceived you. It was the only way I could tell if you were the Keeper or not. Also, I didn’t intend on falling for you. That’s a side bonus.” He reached up and plucked a tear from her cheek, rubbing the liquid between his fingers. He wanted to take her pain, her confusion, her frustration. He wanted to take it all away and lock her in a room where she’d be safe for the rest of time.

But he couldn’t.

Honestly, Sem was going to kill him when he found out Penn had made love to her. Sem would say it was a distraction they didn’t need right now, and he’d be right. But damn if she wasn’t the most beautiful creature Penn had ever seen in his life. The size of her heart alone was enough to make anyone fall in love with her.

He froze at the thought of being in love. Up until now, he’d been adamant about not loving any woman. But now? The possibility didn’t make him sick to his stomach. Maybe it was possible for him to love without worrying about her ending up dead because of him. He lifted his eyes to hers and found her watching him expectantly. He’d gone off course with his thoughts. Time to get his head back in the game.

“It’s not your fault or your friends’ fault. This is all on destiny. I’ll do my part, and I’ll do my best—” she said and lowered her eyes to his lips, which gave him a rush. “But I can’t promise that I’ll save the world. This all sounds so impossible. How do we know that it’ll work?”

Penn huffed and sat back, pulling her into his lap. “The best is all you can do. As for how we know that this plan will work. We don’t. We only know that we need the angel army to push the horsemen back to Hell. It’ll take every angel we can free—that you can free—to do that. So, tell me, do you feel anything from in here?” He wanted to get her out of her parents’ room as quickly as he could. She needed to get her head back in the game, and sadly, that left no time for her to mourn. He’d make sure she grieved properly once all this was said and done. Until then, he’d protect her with all the power he possessed.

She shook her head and scrambled to get out of his lap.

“No, I don’t feel any voodoo vibes or anything.
